AKAette Scholarship Program

The AKAette Scholarship Program is designed to enrich and motivate young ladies of color who are currently sophomores, juniors and seniors attending New Castle County high schools. It exists to help them continue their educational, personal and cultural growth throughout and beyond high school. The young women, known as AKAettes, are recruited by mentors within the sorority, as well as guidance counselors in the various school districts. The curriculum emphasizes independence, enhances self-esteem and prepares participants for college. The AKAette program is based on active learning rather than passive instruction, which enhances participation. Also, because participants meet in small groups of approximately 10 girls, bonding is fostered among the AKAettes and the adults who lead the sessions. Finally, the AKAette program holds an annual event to which parents, family and friends are invited. This event fosters a sense of accomplishment and gives the young ladies an opportunity to practice their public speaking skills. After program completion, graduates are contacted to reinforce the values and skills developed while in the AKAette Scholarship Program.
